Guatemala

Destinations and Activities

Guatemala really is a very special place with so much to offer. Our core trip includes some of our favorites, but should you not have time for the full trip, or want something special for your group, we'll be happy to accommodate you. We specialize in private and custom trips, and will tailor the destinations, lodges, and activities to your desires and interests. Examples of just a few of your options include:

Antigua: A beautifully aged colonial city, Antigua is worth a substantial visit in its own right. Originally founded as the Spanish colonial capital in 1542, it is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the Americas. A powerful earthquake in 1773 convinced the government to move the capital to a nearby valley, creating Guatemala City. Antigua was left in an architectural timewarp which has resulted in the charming city you see today, complete with cobblestone streets, beautiful colonial homes and public buildings, and a vibrant and colorful energy. Without a doubt, Antigua is best seen on foot, taking time to wander off the main streets and discover some of Antigua's monastaries, restored churches and old haciendas. In addition, the challenging and rewarding hike up Volcan Pacaya is easily done as a day trip from Antigua.

Lago de Atitlan: Located between three dormant volcanoes in Guatemala's Western Highlands, Lake Atitlan is considered by many to be one of the world's most beautiful bodies of water. Swimming and kayaking the lake, hiking or biking the hills around the lake, or even getting a breathtaking view of the water while flying down a zipline are some of your active options. When you're taking a break from these heartpounding activities, the culture of the lakeside towns is fascinating to learn about and witness. In particular, the unique local deity Maximon is not to be missed.

Tikal, Maya Biosphere Reserve, Belizean beaches: Possibly the most amazing Mayan ruins you will ever see, Tikal and the surrounding region, known as the Maya Biosphere Reserve, are part of the largest protected land area in Central America. Located deep in the Peten jungle, there is nothing quite like seeing the steep temples reach above the treetops. Tikal's grand plaza was already beginning to take shape at the time of Christ. Tikal is not the only complex in the jungle - many have been discovered and only briefly excavated and many more are expected to lie covered by the vines and trees. Take a long multi-day hike with our guides in the jungle and witness the raw state of some of these amazing reminders of a long ago empire. And while you are on this edge of the country, you should know that the beautiful white sand beaches of Belize are just a short plane ride away.

Markets: The local markets, along with the churches, provide the backdrop for the social fabric of much of the countryside. There are plenty of chances to sample the delights of markets like Chichicastenango or Solola. If you are looking for something to bring home, Guatemala is particularly well known for its high quality woven textiles.

Lodging: Hotel Aurora,an elegantly restored colonial hacienda with a classic courtyard and garden, is conveniently set near the center of Antigua. On the tranquil shores of Lake Atitlan, Hotel Bambu is a comfortable hideaway with lovely grounds that makes a great base for your explorations of all kinds.
