Country Overview:

Guatemala

Guatemala has been called "Central America in concentrated form." With the region's highest and most active volcanoes, most impressive Mayan ruins, and largest protected jungle, Guatemala packs incredible diversity into a country about the size of Tennessee. In addition to its natural wonders, the mix of indigenous and Spanish in its population creates a fascinating culture.

core trip: Experience Guatemala
Our Experience Guatemala adventure vacation has recently been named as one of the top 50 tours of a lifetime by National Geographic Traveler magazine! We are honored by the recognition and we hope you'll join us soon as we journey to several of Guatemala's highlights, including Tikal, Antigua, and Lake Atitlan. Along the way we hike, bike, raft, and kayak, with plenty of time to visit ruins, shop in markets, and wander the fascinating streets of historical towns and cities. Highlights include:

  • Three day hike through the Mayan Biosphere past less known, less visited ancient Mayan ruins finishing at magnificent Tikal
  • Kayaking and hiking on Lake Atitlan--ringed by volcanoes, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world (and pictured above)
  • Active volcanoes, such as accessible and climbable Pacaya
  • The largest protected jungle in Central America, with monkeys, jaguars, and more
  • Antigua--the beautiful colonial city
  • Amazing contemporary Mayan culture that is evident in clothes, weavings, and more throughout the highlands

Destinations & Activities

If a custom adventure vacation fits your needs and desires better, you are in luck. Not only will it cost less than you think, Guatemala has a wealth of options to choose from! We specialize in private and custom trips, and will tailor the destinations, lodges, and activities to your desires and interests. Here are a few examples of destinations, lodges and activities:

Antigua: beautifully aged colonial city, worth a substantial visit. Without a doubt, Antigua is best seen on foot, taking time to get off the main streets and discover some of Antigua’s monasteries, restored churches, and old haciendas.

Lago de Atitlan: Located between three dormant volcanoes in Guatemala's Western Highlands, Lake Atitlán is considered by many to be one of the world's most beautiful bodies of water. Swimming and kayaking the lake, or hiking the hills around the lake, are active options, and the culture of the lakeside towns is fascinating.

Tikal, Maya Biosphere Reserve, Belize beaches: possibly the most amazing Mayan ruins you will ever see, Tikal and the surrounding region known as the Maya Biosphere Reserve are part of the largest protected land area in Central America. Plus, the location is a short plane ride to nearby white sand beaches in Belize, should you crave some time near the ocean.

Markets: The local markets, along with churches, provide the backdrop for the social fabric of much of the countryside. There are plenty of chances to sample the delights of markets like Chichicastenango or Sololá in Guatemala. If you are looking for something to bring home, Guatemala is particularly well known for the high quality textiles woven in its highland villages.
