When to Go
The dry season in Costa Rica runs from December to April, and is preferred by many tourists. The early part of the rainy, or “green” season, from May to August, is also a good time. Most days have clear mornings with showers in the afternoon, fewer tourists fill the hotels and restaurants, and the landscape is a verdant green. September, October and early November are the wettest part of the rainy season and are wetter than most people prefer.
Although Costa Rica is a small country, it has significant variation in climate. The Caribbean side is generally wetter than the rest of the country, and the northwest part of the country, on and above the Nicoya Peninsula, is the driest. The region around Arenal Volcano is about average in terms of rain, but somewhat paradoxically, the volcano is more likely to be seen on the clear mornings of the rainy season than during the dry season, when the top is often shrouded in clouds.
